Paul's excellent work has been present in all "NBC" issues, therefore I can definitely recommend his book. It includes many collaborations with another NBC veteran, Lawrence Elwick.

Plus, one of the award is a digital copy of amazing "Charlie Parker Handyman" book! There's also some original Charlie art as well.
In style.
I already have got my copy, and I urge you to get one for yourself while stock last (limited to 100 copies!). Inside, you'll find all the Cindy and Biscuit adventures (including the colour ones) released to date, plus some new pages.

The book is highly recommended, however I'd think twice if you plan to buy it as a present for your nephew or niece. They might start watching out for the woods.
Cindy and Biscuit: Vol 1: We Love Trouble can be bought from Milk The Cat shop.Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-27193823953816798932014-06-04T23:40:00.000+02:002014-06-04T23:44:21.483+02:00HOAX Psychosis Blues
I'm not really sure about my choice of words for such vast yet delicate topic. I can say with no doubt that HOAX is a very special project. Special and personal for its creator Ravi Thornton.

You see, HOAX is both a graphic novel titled Hoax, Psychosis Blues and a "dark musical" titled Hoax, My Lonely Heart but the two don't mimic each other. The events of the graphic novel are set after the events of the musical. Both are based on a poem, titled the same, written by Ravi's younger brother Rob who have struggled for the much of his life with schizophrenia, until his tragic death in 2008.

When it comes to the book's art, there's plenty of familiar names in there: Hannah Berry, Karrie Fransman, Leonardo M. Giron, Julian Hanshaw, Rozi Hathaway, Rian Hughes, Ian Jones, Jade Moss, Mark Stafford and Bryan Talbot. I had a chance of reading the whole book and I can assure you that art is amazing. And so is the story. It makes you think and realize that despite hard times we live in we're indeed very lucky, and how hard it is for people affected with mental illnesses and their families.

You can order the book from this website. The print run is limited to 1000 copies and sales will support mental health charities. Hoax, My Lonely Heart is showing from 4th to 7th June 2014, at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, more information can be found here.

The short comic is available online for free and I hope you will enjoy it.

4.2.3. is a prequel to the graphic novel R.E.M. on which I've worked as a co-editor and letterer with Ryan Colucci (writer) and Zsombor Huszka (art). It's a great story about a loss of somebody we loved, and things we're trying to do to fill the emptiness inside us. The book also explores sleep and possibilities of living without the neccesity of entering Sandman's domain every day.

If you're not intrigued yet, please tell me: which comic book has also a short movie as a prequel?

R.E.M. has been sucessfully published! Thank you for all the support.
How about another Kickstarter comic-related campaign?

Atlantis is about the last agonizing times of the great lost continent of Atlantis where a handful of men are trying to save humankind from extinction. The once beneficial flux, the life energy that once sustained humans and gods alike, has now been turned into a poisonous force by a powerful lineage of religious tyrants. Agathon, the young son of a member of the resistance group, and Phile, the daughter of the god Poseidon, united by their love and the hope for a new beginning, fight a battle against time to restore the flux, overthrow the High Priestess and save Atlantis from itself.

Atlantis is a collaborative endeavour of artists spread over three countries, Italy, England and the US. Arin Leviti (arinleviti.blogspot.co.uk) wrote the story, Denis Medri (http://denismedriartworks.blogspot.co.uk/) will create the arts, Paolo Francescutto will colour them and Elisabeth Cirelli (www.lizcirelli.co.uk) will compose the music. Animations will be created by Tall Chair in San Francisco using their software Active Reader (www.tallchair.com). And of course, Atlantis will be made possible thanks to each single backer who will donate to our project.

It's a graphic novel called R.E.M. Written by Ryan Colucci and drawn by Zsombor Huszka it's 176 pages of great content that made, and still makes, me proud. You can pre-order the book using Kickstarter campaign and get a lot of interesting bonus stuff along with the book, plus some rewards have already been unlocked! It's one time deal only!
You might think it's only for US folks since shipping/P&P rates have to be included - but wait! The campaign has special rewards and P&P rates for Europe. Please check it out or have a browse at the official website.
I want to recommend three European comics. They've been published in English at one point and they're very popular across the Europe, but I still feel that UK audience isn't really aware of their existence.

All I can say is: shame on you.

Let's begin with the probably the most popular title among the three. Thorgal - created by Jean Van Hamme (story) and Grzegorz Rosiński (art) has sold in millions of copies across the Europe and world. 34th album is expected to be published this year, and the series has spawned a few spin-offs, including books, audiobooks and games.

Thorgal is hard to classify as the series went through many changes, including the change of the writer (after 29th album Yves Sente has replaced Van Hamme) and style of art (new volumes are painted, not drawn). It's mainly a fantasy/sci-fi family saga set in early medieval times with heavy influences of Nordic mythology. Sounds simple, but hardcore Thorgal fans might skin me alive for this short blurb as both the story and its settings are quite complex.

The series is widely available in UK thanks to Cinebook. However, the order of albums is slightly different when compared to the original run. Child of the Stars, which is the first UK volume, contains original issues #7 (Child of Stars) and #14 (Aaricia), which is almost alright, since both sets of stories are sort of prequels to the main story. Things get a bit more complicated with the second UK volume The Three Elders of Aran which is a combo of issue #3 (The Three Elders of Aran) and #4 (The Black Galley). Where are issues #1 and #2? Haven't been published by the Cinebook yet - although both albums were published in the past in English by other publishers.
Nonetheless, the series can be highly entertaining even without first two stories. I can recommend going from first UK volume (Child of the Stars) until at least UK vol. 8 (Wolf Cub). Further albums are great too, but vol. 1-8 are simply the best of the best.

I think there's a really good chance that you heard about the next title or at least about its author. Enki Bilal - The Nikopol Trilogy.
I'm not sure if Bilal is well known in UK. I think he gets some recognition, for example Comic Heroes magazine has just done a long feature about him and his work. However, it's quite hard to get his books in English, The Nikopol Trilogy is unfortunately good example. They've been out of print for a long time and used copies are getting ridiculously expensive. If you can read in French, I recommend just getting a French, thus original, album.

The third title is Rork by Andreas. The story, set in early XXth century, follows paths of Rork - a young looking 300 years old magician of an unknown origin and uknown destination. I guess you can call it a bit lovecraftian, and sometimes it's really not easy for the reader to read a story that isn't really resolved in the finale. Andreas himself is known for creating comic books that require multiple readings.

The series has gone through some changes. It started in 1978 as a series of short episodes eventually tied into a bigger plot. Then the story was on hiatus for a few years only to be revived in late eighties - and by this time Andreas has changed his drawing style a lot when compared to the first two albums.

Rork concluded in 1992, but came back in 2002 and 2012 with publication of older tie-in stories and the brand new (although again sort of tie-in) album which is also included in the integral album. It worth mentioning that something like a Rork-Universe exists and it includes another Andreas great title: Capricorne.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that only three albums are available in English: Fragments (1990), Passages (1990) and The Graveyard of Cathedrals and Starlight (1996). Rork was also featured in Cheval Noir.
No? Then click there! Dan is a busy <strike>guy</strike>/<strike>human being</strike>/beast, who is, after mastering the art of milking the cat, publishing great Cindy & Biscuit strips on the blog (also featured in NBC #3). Right now it seems he's taken a tiny break, but it's worth to check all the past episodes.

I own most of small press titles in which Dan has appeared, so I can honestly recommend his works, although some of titles are in the 3xOUT zone: sold out, out of print, out of reach. I guess that's a tiny downside of small press titles. Too many great stories can't reach public, because they've been published years ago in a zine printed in 200 copies. Like "Escape from January" which featured brillant strips by Dan, Neil Evans and other artists. A real gem published in 2009, I got a copy from Neil Evans who kindly sent me one - but the rest of humanity will never enjoy it. It's a pity...

OK, enough of my ramblings... Just wanted to tell you Cindy and Biscuit no. 3, the latest collection of Dan White's works, has been published not so long ago. By the way, that Dan is also a regular contributor on Mindless Ones blog/podcast!
You can check it out at this location. I haven't read it yet, but based on their previous collaborative works, I'm expecting an interesting, yet disturbing, exploration of super-hero-freaks themes.
The book is available for sale right here, along with brilliant and twisted "Roachwell" (some episodes were published in NBC #2) and "Haunted Bowels". I could swear that both titles were sold out last time when I was checking out the store, but it seems guys have found a few copies in their basementKarol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-15991567765609220862013-06-27T16:52:00.001+02:002013-06-27T16:52:01.274+02:00NBC #4?Maybe... maybe...Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-20814698714937711892012-06-05T01:07:00.002+02:002012-06-05T01:07:47.390+02:00Reviews, mentions...A few reviews and mentions from the net. David Z. Greene has set up a fundraising campaign to raise the funds for printing, promotion and distribution to the shops of his newest book. I've just put down my order for the book, and I hope you'll take a minute of your time to check his pitch and animated preview.

It’s my ‘second difficult album’ of collected short stories.
'Where's North From Here?' is another 70 page dish of short, stupid stories featuring stolen records, table tennis, Mexican gods, massages, wrestling, a daft punk and more.
Goats, booze, suspense, heartache, laughter, goose-pimples, sweaty palms, running nose and deep cerebral stimulation are also guaranteed.

As for the quality of the work in the book, all I can say is it will be the single most greatest publication known to mankind since ‘Building Self-Confidence for Dummies’.

My previous book ‘Swimming With Shoes On’ seemed to be enjoyed but pretty much most people who wanted to throw me their opinion. It received great reviews, warranted a French publication and sold out of 4 print runs.
(A 5th printing is on it’s way.)

There’s different ways to contribute with some extra bits too. But it could just take £7 ($11) to help.
If you can help in anyway by pre-ordering the book or even spreading this news over the web, I would be forever grateful.
Witerscheim, and has been published in 2005-2009. The story, put together as a series of loosely linked episodes, contains everyday adventures of the main character and the people he meets on his life’s path. A bit naive, a little sad, full of hope nonetheless.

We now have a lovely KICKSTARTER drive up and running, for our documentary style graphic novel - PARECOMIC. Its a 200 page graphic novel we are working on now and very much enjoying, but need a bit of funding support on.

'Parecomic: Michael Albert and the Story of Participatory Economics' by Sean Michael Wilson and Carl Thompson, with an introduction by Noam Chomsky.

"...a graphic novel about something that affects us all: the system we live in - what's wrong with it, and how we might be able change it for the better! The recent upsurge in popular protest in the USA and around the world shows that people are not happy with the state of things. The Occupy movements show us that many people would prefer a better system, a model that will work for the 99%, not just the 1%."

So, please go and have a look at the info and video there, and pledge some funding support if you like the PARECOMIC project. The money is only a PLEDGE at first, it does not get taken out of your account now, its taken out about 2 months later, if the total target money is made. To pledge you just select an amount from the choices on the right side, and it processes it via amazon: kickstarter.com/projects/471898784/parecomic-a-documentary-graphic-novel.Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-33131345899341979812012-02-20T10:15:00.002+01:002012-02-21T09:21:56.642+01:00New British Comics #3 PLIt's finally here!
Contest #1

Name all the characters (animals too!) which appear on the cover of NBC #3.

Answer(s): Charlie Parker, Mary Poppins, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred
Hitchock, Dormouse from 'Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, the seagull and the peach from Roald Dahl's 'James and The giant peach'.

The question proved to be rather hard. Nobody guessed all the names, and "The seagull and the peach" appeared to be the toughest to get. Nonetheless we picked the winner with biggest 'score': Daniel Farrell! Congratulations Daniel!

Contest #2

Take a look on the NBC #3 cover again. All of the characters there have British roots. All but one. Can you tell which?

Answer: Charlie Parker.

This was the easier contest, nobody has sent a wrong answer. So we had to draw a winner and his name is... Dickon Harris! Congratulations!

Thank you all for taking part in the contest!Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-91156198968419401722012-02-07T21:51:00.000+01:002012-02-07T21:51:16.685+01:00PostponedI have to go into the wild for a few days, and probably won't have any internet connection, so I think it would be a good idea to postpone the grand finale of the contest till 13th of February. Yes, that's right, two contests mean you got two chances to win a copy of "New British Comics #3" with special drawn dedication from Lawrence Elwick who made the cover of the anthology.

The winner of each contest will receive a copy of NBC #3, and if he/she/it sends a picture themselves Lawrence will do a picture of them inside the book. You can also request a picture with one of the characters from the book which Lawrence co-created with Paul O'Connell.

Ready? Let's start! First, you need to take a look on the cover of NBC #3.

Contest #1

Name all the characters (animals too!) which appear on the cover of NBC #3.

There's not that many of them, so the winner will be drawn from a group which has provided list of all characters, or a person drawn from a group which sends the highest number of correct names.

Contest #2

Take a look on the NBC #3 cover again. All of the characters there have British roots. All but one. Can you tell which?

Again, the winner will be drawn from all correct answers.

Please send answers to karolwisnia@gmail.com with "NBC #3 contest" as a subject. The contests will close on the 7th of February 2012. Please note that you can participate in both contests (or just one if that's your wish), but you can have only entry each.

It's sad that after 15 years of existence the company was forced to shut down "due to unforeseen and adverse circumstances" which have left owners, creators and fans of Bad Press in sorrow. Since Bad Press shop was very kind to "New British Comics" being the heart and brain of the UK distribution that leaves us mourning too.

Thankfully, nature does not tolerate void, and Braw Books has been created lately!

"Our intention is quite simple - to gather together the output of various seasoned Scottish cartoonists into one place, a lasting testament and reward for their years of dedication, skill and application, and a vital record and starting place for the (in)experienced reader (or the simply curious)."

Thanks to people behind Braw Books NBC has found a old-new house from which you can always order our books, and many more great titles, such as: "Collected John Miller", "Collected Shug ’90" and a whole line of "Evil Wee Comics". Definitely it's worth checking out, both online and during comicons in the near future.Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-4454888689104993022011-11-10T18:44:00.007+01:002011-11-12T16:16:44.457+01:00Tiny updates: 35mm, Comica Comiket, Biscuit
If you are looking for quality movie reviews, I recommend you to check 35movieminutes.com. It's an interesting mix of podcasts created by a small, yet dedicated team, and written reviews, published by Ryan Colucci who is an independent producer and writer in both movie and comic areas. By "independent" I don't mean "wannabe", Ryan is a professional, his next movie ("White Space") should be up for release next year. Anyway, his profession gives a nice, fresh perspective on reviewed movies, both new and old.

Every contributor of NBC seemed to do a lot in the last few months, so please just start clicking links on the right for updates (lazy, lazy, lazy). Many of them will be present at Comica Comiket including John Miers, WJC, Van Nim, Paul O'Connell & Lawrence Elwick!

In case you've missed it: Mindlessones.com had a special with Biscuit, the character from "Cindy & Biscuit Save The World (again)" published in NBC #3 and "CINDY & BISCUIT no.1".Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-3297768800229256392011-06-21T01:14:00.004+02:002011-06-21T01:40:35.951+02:00WJC contest - The EndThank you all for taking part in our contest, and thank you for waiting such long time for its final. Time to show the world the real WJC. Here he is:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 244px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOdS2Q8Nufc5tIdzPOWuOf_5JbD2AiwpRNF9TgA3l5yb47s4oqaGc-MzVUVmV2N8bfdWzpMAu11YHX_sL_oU8Dy8iZhWz7m_8GaYyPVYYzK0NsxL9vDFw18gbGzc98BQfSstPHBR-CsLZ/s400/WJC3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620448090342964882" />

Yes, he is number 3! We got a lot of answers from you, and among them 25 were indeed correct - also, you were quite often pointing at numbers 4, 7 and 9.

Now let's draw a winner! He was just selected by a tiny script written in Atari BASIC, and run on an Atari800Win emulator as seen below:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4GaaO1PrVe2x3o2g5ZWukoNBIrhvIdny4ZcGN1paZY5xCrgUAKmkoCDCL8bF-5Dz-aQjZmgZD4CZRD6GGqfgCGMsogPz9zUGK75m2ORhCTkV9d2NNXO9id5NHJOg3fd4uUTrjFeu9BIMw/s320/atari001.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620448152776947586" />

Number 9! And ninth person to send us a correct answer was... Kevin Richter! Congratulation Kevin, we'll send you the prize soon!

Once again thank you all, hope you had a great time and a lot of fun!Karol Wisniewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13943072368395647520noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8259659491416315823.post-15574413240668892032011-06-17T17:14:00.005+02:002011-06-17T17:32:14.035+02:00NBC at Gosh! We're very happy to report that from now on you can buy all issues of "New British Comics" at Gosh Comics in London at 39 Great Russell Street. But what do we really know about WJC? Is his existence a fact or just a myth? Who is he? A family man from south of England or a creature from deep depths of the ocean? Or maybe he did come from the outer space?

It's time to learn the truth! And get a free copy of NBC #3 with an exclusive sketch (you can have a sneek peek on the bottom of the post) inside it, made by, the one and only, WJC. To get your hands on it, you have to:

1. Take a look on a picture below. It's really an auto portrait of WJC, who's hidden among many other people. Take a careful look, and decide which person is WJC.
2. Send a number which is next to the person you've chosen from the picture to karolwisnia@gmail.com. Please write 'WJC contest' as a subject of the e-mail - it will make my life a bit easier.
3. On 20th of June (Monday) we will reveal the truth on the blog, and draw a price winner from the people who have sent the right answer. We will contact him/her trough e-mail, and ask for his/her address. Then the prize shall be sent.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifYXTMaRbxQNaDjZmQQ3btHZSXdHdntCtoWINi2kXkB79LJkauLO4k6v20j1_nY4pKzWEPffrUeu8FJ_2sRIJf786BAa9llOgPQvWg3q_MYuKrr7ZeDyitGcTV0-9w1fU7KTmDbgsRuNUz/s400/wjc_contest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615134597901042754" />

Click on the picture to view full sized version

To increase your chances we recommend doing a solid research on WJC by visiting his blog warwickjohnsoncadwell.blogspot.com.
